Entrevista com o baixista Pasi Kauppinen do Sonata Arctica

"Nunca fomos uma banda de Power Metal puro"

    Novamente o Sonata Arctica está se preparando para uma longa turnê pela América Latina, que tem como principal objetivo divulgar o álbum Talviyö, que foi lançado em 2019.

     Com a intenção de conhecer mais deste álbum e também da sua turnê, que no Brasil acontecerá nas cidades de Belo Horizonte/MG ( 03/04 ), Brasília/DF ( 04/04 ), Curitiba/PR ( 05/04 ), Porto Alegre/RS ( 07/04 ), Florianópolis/SC ( 08/04 ), Limeira/SP ( 10/04 ), São Paulo/SP ( 11/04 ) e Rio de Janeiro/RJ ( 12/04 ), o jornalista Fernando R. R. Júnior do Rock On Stage conversou com o gentil baixista Pasi Kauppinen e este revelou algumas curiosidades do álbum Talvyö, a expectativa para os shows por aqui e algumas outras curiosidades. Rock On Stage: Primeiro, muito obrigado pela entrevista. Tanto no The Ninth Hour quanto neste novo Talviyö, o som da banda é menos Power Metal e mais cheio de melodias tranquilas, de qualquer forma, como você apresenta Talviyö aos fãs que estão conhecendo a banda hoje?
Pasi Kauppinen: Obrigado, é bom conversar com você. Talviyö é um pouco mais Melódico e de Rock do que os álbuns anteriores na minha opinião. Se você verificar nosso catálogo, nunca fomos uma banda de Power Metal puro.

    Como sempre houve Rock e elementos Progressivos e até Pop. Penso que Talviyö também possui todos esses elementos e representa muito bem o Sonata Arctica.

Rock On Stage: Embora o nome Talviyö signifique noite de inverno, o que senti quando ouvi foi uma atmosfera de paz na sua música, foi essa a ideia da sua composição?
Pasi Kauppinen: Você está certo, eu sinto o mesmo, quando você olha para a capa do álbum, é uma paisagem pacífica e reflete a atmosfera da música. No álbum, há músicas de Power Metal e Rock rápidas e Melódicas, mas, todas têm a vibração que você pode ver no nome e na capa do álbum.

Rock On Stage: De fato, atualmente no planeta estamos sofrendo muitas mudanças climáticas perigosas, a ideia do Sonata Arctica é chamar a atenção para esse problema, como por exemplo, o jovem ativista Greta Thunberg está fazendo?
Pasi Kauppinen: É bom que todas as pessoas estejam cientes das coisas que estão acontecendo globalmente. Mas, não nos vejo mensageiros, embora algumas músicas tenham temas das coisas que acontecem no mundo.

Rock On Stage: Por que escolher Cold como o primeiro clipe de Talvyio?
Pasi Kauppinen: Na verdade, A Little Less Undestanding foi o primeiro single do álbum. Mas, como videoclipe Cold foi o primeiro. É uma música legal para o que gravamos no videoclipe e foi bom lançá-la como um segundo single.

Rock On Stage: Comente um pouco sobre The Last Of The Lambs, que faz parte de uma saga que já dura alguns recordes. Teremos mais continuações em trabalhos futuros? E várias das músicas de Talvyio estão ligadas aos álbuns Stones Grow Her Name e The Ninth Hour, isso foi intencional ou faz parte de um projeto maior?
Pasi Kauppinen: The Last Of The Lambs é uma música com sabor escuro, com um loop de bateria legal passando por ela. Faz parte da chamada Saga de Caleb. Geralmente, a saga tem novas partes em quase todos os álbuns.

    Mas, não sei dizer se ela terá mais partes novas, mas, se eu tivesse que adivinhar, em algum momento, de qualquer maneira. Não pensei muito nas conexões com a The Ninth Hour ou com os Stones ( Stones Grow Her Name ). Eu acho que Talviyö é uma continuação natural para o ponto de onde álbuns como Pariah's Child começou, musicalmente.

Rock On Stage: Essa turnê latino-americana do Sonata Arctica terá 17 datas, que já se tornaram um costume, quais são as expectativas dessa nova turnê? E que lembranças você tem das cidades latino-americanas que você visitou em outras ocasiões? Aqui no Brasil especificamente, alguma comida, bebida ou situação engraçada e notável?
Pasi Kauppinen: As turnês latino-americanas são sempre ótimas. Elas são bastante difíceis com o tanto de cidades que viajamos. Porém, os shows sempre são tão poderosos e o público é incrível. Há muitas boas lembranças do Brasil. Jantares de churrascaria com boas bebidas. Também praias e o ótimo clima quente. É tão bom voltar.

Rock On Stage: Praticamente 25 anos de Sonata Arctica, o que você acha que mudou mais na música da banda desde que apareceu pela primeira vez na pequena Kemi? Falando em datas comemorativas, quais bandas você chamaria de um festival comemorando 25 anos do Sonata Arctica e onde no mundo você realizaria o evento?
Pasi Kauppinen: O Sonata começou originalmente como uma banda mais orientada para o Rock, e o lado do Power Metal apareceu no primeiro álbum, embora ainda tivesse os elementos do Rock. Hoje em dia ainda existem esses elementos Power Metal e Prog Metal além de mais alguns desses elementos do Rock.

    É claro que a música evoluiu ao longo dos anos, a banda cresceu e está mais madura atualmente. Se esse tipo de festival de 25 anos acontecer, acho que deveria ser organizado em Kemi, na Finlândia, onde tudo começou.

    As bandas que poderiam fazer parte do festival poderiam ser, por exemplo, Stratovarius, que foi a primeira banda que o Sonata Arctica abriu a sua turnê europeia em 2000. Além disso, as novas bandas de Jani ( Liimatainen - guitarrista do Sonata Arctica ) a Cain's Offering ou a The Dark Element, seriam bacanas estarem lá.

Interview with bassist Pasi Kauppinen of Sonata Arctica

Rock On Stage: First, thank you very much for the interview. Both in The Ninth Hour and in this new Talviyö, the band's sound is less Power Metal and more full of quiet melodies, anyway, how do you present Talviyö to the fans who are meeting the band today?
Pasi Kauppinen: Thank you, it’s nice to chat with you. Talviyö is a little bit more Melodic and Rock album than the previous albums in my opinion.

    If you check back our catalog, we have never been a pure Power Metal band. As there is always been Rock and Progressive and even Pop elements. I think that Talviyö also has all those elements and represents Sonata Arctica very well.

Rock On Stage: Although the name Talviyö means winter night, what I felt when I heard it was an atmosphere of peace in your music, was that the idea in your composition?
Pasi Kauppinen: You are right, I feel the same, when you look at the album cover, it’s a peaceful landscape and reflects the atmosphere of the music. On the album there is fast and Melodic Power and Rock songs but all have the vibe that you can see on the album name and the cover.

Rock On Stage: In fact, currently on the planet we are suffering from many dangerous climate changes, the idea of ​​Sonata Arctica is to draw attention to this problem, as for example, has the young activist Greta Thunberg been doing?
Pasi Kauppinen: It’s good for all the people to be aware of the things happening globally. But I don't see us a messengers, even though some songs have thematics from the ongoing things around the world.

Rock On Stage: Why choose Cold as Talvyio's first clip? Did you have a special movement?
Pasi Kauppinen: Actually, a Little Less Undestanding was the first single from the album. But as a video it was the first. It is a cool Rock beat song for what we shot a video and it felt good to release it as a second single.

Rock On Stage: Comment a little about The Last Of The Lambs, which is part of a saga that has lasted a few records. Will we have more continuations in future works? And several of Talvyio's songs are connected to the albums Stones Grow Her Name and The Ninth Hour, was that intentional or is it part of a larger project?
Pasi Kauppinen: Lambs is a dark flavoured song with a cool drum loop going through it. It’s part of the so called Caleb saga. Usually the saga has got new parts almost on every album.

    But I can’t tell if it’s gonna have new parts anymore, but if I had to guess it will in some point anyway. I haven’t thought about the connections to The Ninth Hour or to the Stones too much. I think that Talviyö is a natural continuation for the period of albums that Pariah’s Child started, musically.

Rock On Stage: This Latin American tour of Sonata Arctica will have 17 dates, which has already become a custom, what are the expectations with this new tour? And what memories do you have of the Latin American cities that you have visited on other occasions? Here in Brazil specifically, any funny, remarkable food, drink or situation?
Pasi Kauppinen: Latin American tours are always really great. They are quite rough as the travelling side. But shows are there always so powerful and the audiences are so amazing. There is lots of good memories from Brazil. Churrascaria dinners with good drinks with it. Also beaches and the great warm climate. It’s so nice to come back.

Rock On Stage: Practically 25 years of Sonata Arctica, what do you feel has changed the most in the band's music since you first appeared in little Kemi? Speaking of commemorative dates, which bands would you call for a festival celebrating 25 years of Sonata Arctica and where in the world would you host the event?
Pasi Kauppinen: Sonata originally started as a more rock oriented band and the power metal side came along for the first album even though it still had the rock elements. Nowadays there is still those Power Metal and Prog Metal and again more of those Rock elements. Of course the music has evolved along the guys have grown up and is more mature in these days.

    If that kind of 25th Anniversary Festival woud be happenig I think it should be organized in Kemi, Finland from where all started. The bands which could be part of the festival could be for example Stratovarius which was the first band that Sonata Arctica supported on their European tour in 2000. Also Jani’s new bands Cain's Offering or The Dark Element would be nice to be there.
