Entrevista com Mark Farner

"É o que estabelecemos como padrão desde 1969, celebrar os 50 anos é monumental!"

    Nos anos 70, o vocalista e guitarrista Mark Fredrick Farner ajudou a imortalizar o Grand Funk Railroad como uma das mais importantes bandas da história do Rock fazendo frente para o Led Zeppelin. Depois que saiu, o músico nascido em Flint no estado do Michigan nos Estados Unidos e que fará 70 anos no final de setembro lançou alguns álbuns solo, porém, sem nunca distanciar muito da lendária banda que foi um integrante de considerável importância.

    Atualmente, Mark Farner e sua American Band estão realizando uma turnê comemorativa pelos 50 anos da instituição de Rock'n'Roll, a qual ele é fundador e é conhecida por nós como Grand Funk Railroad e que no Brasil será exibida em quatro datas no mês de maio, sendo elas: São Paulo - 10/5; Curitiba - 11/5; Brasília - 12/5 e fechando o quarto giro no Brasil com o show no Rio de Janeiro no dia 15/5.

    Nesta entrevista exclusiva ao Rock On Stage para o jornalista Fernando R. R. Júnior, o simpático e muito atencioso Mark Farner nos contou algumas curiosidades muito interessantes como um passeio pela zona rural de Roma nos tempos do Grand Funk Railroad com o baterista Don Brewer, de alguns shows nos 70, quais seus álbuns e músicas favoritas que gravou com a banda, novos projetos, melhores shows, sobre o Brasil e muito mais...

Rock On Stage: Que outras memórias você tem do Grand Funk que ainda não foram relatadas em uma entrevista?
Mark Farner: Enquanto tocava na Itália, a banda foi convidada para uma casa particular. Don ( Brewer - bateria e vocal ) não quis ir... então, Mel ( Schacher - baixo ) e eu acomodamos o nosso anfitrião italiano… a limusine pegou eu e Mel no Hotel e saímos em uma viagem de tarde. Viajamos de Roma por 25 minutos a meia hora e depois ela saiu da rodovia no que parecia ser uma estrada rural através sentido interior. Quando saímos da autoestrada, andávamos em duas faixas que ziguezagueavam por um campo em uma pista de mão dupla e detalhe isso em uma limusine.

    Como nós chegamos ao alto da primeira grande colina, a trilha nos levou à uma curva acentuada para a direita, que é onde nós vimos dois guardas armados, ambos com submetralhadoras no pescoço, Mel e eu fomos surpreendidos pelos dois guardas com a aproximação no vilarejo. Duas voltas depois, uma hora mais tarde antes de descer a última colina para o local da vila... era como uma criança que vê a Disney, era magnífico, uma visão privilegiada.

    E nós soubemos que tínhamos os dois sujeitos atrás de nós, aqueles que tinham as sub metralhadoras ao redor dos pescoços e o dono da casa de campo e o anfitrião de nossa excursão nos conheceu. Depois de ser levado para dentro e introduzido para muitos convidados, o anfitrião sugeriu que visitássemos seu vinho Sellar. Aqui começamos a provar tudo que foi colocado à nossa frente... e essa é a última coisa que eu lembro depois de acordar no meu quarto de hotel no dia seguinte. A Itália sempre foi boa para nós.

Rock On Stage: Como é hoje para mostrar as novas gerações puramente composições do Rock'n'Roll como aquelas que fazem parte do seu set list desta turnê do 50º aniversário de 2019-2020?
Mark Farner: É o que estabelecemos como padrão desde 1969, celebrar os 50 anos é monumental! Os fãs mais novos parecem gostar muito da música porque eles balançam o quadril no momento. Todo público é um público novo e é emocionante ver pessoas mais jovens que apreciam honestamente a música Rock Clássica por sua sinceridade e a esperança de transmitir mensagens.

Rock On Stage: E como você sente essa atual troca de energia com o público com celulares nas mãos que filmam o show, especialmente os mais jovens?
Mark Farner: Se eles capturam a emoção do show e da música, sem o som de suas próprias vozes, isso é uma coisa boa para todos.

Rock On Stage: Para mim... David Fricke da revista Rolling Stone disse corretamente: "Você não pode falar sobre rock nos anos 70 sem falar sobre o Grand Funk Railroad". O que você pensa sobre isso?
Mark Farner:  Eu acho que ele está correto!!!

Rock On Stage: Peter Grant desligou a eletricidade em um show do Grand Funk só porque você era melhor que Led Zeppelin ( a banda em que ele empresariava ). Isso foi ruim ou serviu para aumentar a importância do Grand Funk na história?
Mark Farner: Eu acho que serviu para validar o Rock and Roll Americano... o inglês e o australiano e todos os outros tentaram cantar em inglês americano... quando eu vou para a Inglaterra eu não canto nos estilo que os reis ingleses cantariam. Emissão é a forma mais sincera de lisonja.

Rock On Stage: Dos discos do Grand Funk você gravou quais são os seus favoritos e quais músicas você tem um carinho especial?
Mark Farner: Meus favoritos são "The Red Album", "E Pluribus Funk", "On Time", "Survival", "Closer To Home"... mas, talvez não nessa ordem. Eu tenho um carinho especial pelas músicas "Please Don’t Worry", "I Come Tumblin", "Time Machine", "Country Road" e "I'm Your Captain".

Rock On Stage: E Pluribus Funk ( 1971 ) foi o primeiro álbum que eu ouvi do Grand Funk Railroad, então eu tenho um carinho especial por ele. Este álbum foi chamado aqui de disco da moeda ( por seu formato ) que nos ofereceu composições como "Footstompin 'Music", "People, Let's Stop The War"e "Loneliness", quais foram suas inspirações para eles?
Mark Farner:  O encerramento da Guerra do Vietnã com os Estados Unidos.

Rock On Stage: Se nesta turnê comemorativa de 50 anos foi possível convidar qualquer nome de Rock para dividir o palco com você em um show especial, quais bandas seriam escolhidas e por quê?
Mark Farner: Alice Cooper, porque atualmente estou trabalhando com Alice Cooper junto com Wayne Kramer ( do MC5 ) e Johnny Bee ( do Detroit Wheels ) em um projeto atual que homenageia a música de Detroit.

Rock On Stage: Quais são os melhores shows já feitos na sua carreira?
Mark Farner: Em 1969 no First Atlanta Georgia Pop Festival e em 1971 em Phoenix na casa de shows Madison Square Garden, onde os fundos foram usados ​​para construir em Phoenix sete centros de reabilitação para usuários de drogas.

Rock On Stage: Conte-nos alguma curiosidade sobre um deles.
Mark Farner: O diretor de iluminação colocou cera de dança no palco do primeiro show do Madison Square Garden e não me contou. Eu descobri ao subir ao palco e foi como entrar em uma pista de patinação no gelo.

Rock On Stage: Se há muita conversa que Rock vai morrer, e embora eu acredite que a renovação é um pouco difícil, às vezes há um nome como Greta Van Fleet, que nos faz felizes e prova que enquanto você pode ligar uma guitarra, um baterista aliado a um bom vocalista, a chama continuará a queimar, para você, teremos futuros nomes que poderão ter uma longa carreira de sucesso como o Grand Funk Railroad?
Mark Farner: Somente se eles estão tocando com seus corações a dignidade do Rock and Roll é preservada.

Rock On Stage: E existe alguma banda que veio até você e sentiu que poderia seguir esse caminho?
Mark Farner: Isso não acontece no mundo em que vivo.

Rock On Stage: Que lembranças você guarda de suas outras passagens no Brasil?
Mark Farner: Algumas grandes pessoas, excelentes comidas e o sentimento de amor que foi deixado em minha alma.

Rock On Stage: Você já conheceu algum lugar ou experimentou alguma comida típica?
Mark Farner: Eu não me atrevi a ir longe no Brasil por causa das limitações de tempo, mas eu escolhi um bom frango cozido em uma reunião de vendedores em um viaduto de São Paulo.

Rock On Stage: Obrigado pela entrevista, para encerrar peço que deixem suas considerações finais e também um convite para os fãs brasileiros que estarão nos shows.
Mark Farner: Agradeço a Deus pela abundância de amor que flui na música para meus fãs brasileiros, pois, os fãs reforçaram esse amor em mim quando eu toco meu Rock and Roll no Brasil.

Rock On Stage: What other memories do you have of Grand Funk that have not yet been reported in an interview?
Mark Farner: While playing in Italy the band was invited to a private villa. Don didn’t want to go so Mel and i accommodated our italian host…the limo picked mel and i up at the hotel and we set out on a late afternoon journey. Traveling from roma 25 minutes to a half hour and pulled off the highway on what looked to be a rural road through the country side. When we left the black top we were on a two track that zig zag through a field on a two track in a limo.

    As we crested the first big hill the tow track took a sharp right and stared the decent, that ‘s where we met the two arm guards, both with sub machine guns around their necks, mel and i were some what surprised by the two guards as we approched the villa. Two turns later we crested the last hill before dropping down into the location of the villa it was like a kid seeing Disney, it was magnicificant, it was great at this point.

    We knew we had two guys behind us that had sub macine guns straped around their necks, and the owner of the villa and the host of our excursion met us. After being taken inside and inroduced to many guest, the host suggested that we visit his wine Sellar. Here we began to taste everyting that was put infront of us…and that’s the last thing i remember after waking up in my hotel room the next moring. Italy was good to us.

Rock On Stage: How is it today to show the new generations purely Rock'n'Roll compositions like those that are part of the set list of this 2019-2020 50th Anniversary Tour?
Mark Farner: It is what we have set as a standard since 1969, celebrating 50 years is monumental! The newer fans seem to really enjoy the music because it’s played from the hip at the moment. Every audience is a new audience and it is exciting to see younger people who honestly appreciate Classic Rock music music for it’s sincerity and hope giving message.

Rock On Stage: And how do you feel this current exchange of energy with the audience with cell phones in the hands filming the show, especially the younger ones?
Mark Farner: If they capture the excitement of the show and the music without the to much of their own voices drounding out the concert, this is a good thing for everybody.

Rock On Stage: For me ... David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine rightly said: "You can not talk about rock in the 70's without talking about the Grand Funk Railroad." What do you think about this?
Mark Farner: I think he’s accurate!!

Rock On Stage: Peter Grant turned off the electricity at a Grand Funk show just because you were better than Led Zeppelin (the band he was manager ). Was that bad or did it serve to increase the importance of Grand Funk in history?
Mark Farner: I think it served to validate American Rock and Roll…the english and the austrailian and everyone else attempt to sing in american english…when i go to england i do not sing in the kings english. Emmitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

Rock On Stage: From the Grand Funk albums you recorded what are your favorites and which songs do you have a special affection for?
Mark Farner: My favortes are "The Red Album", "E Pluribus Funk", "On Time", "Survival", "Closer To Home"… but maybe not in that order. I have a special affection for "Please Don’t Worry", "I Come Tumblin", "Time Machine", "Country Road" and "I'm Your Captain".

Rock On Stage: E Pluribus Funk ( 1971 ) was the first album I heard from the Grand Funk Railroad, so I have a special affection for it. This album was called a disc of the coin ( for its format ) that offered us with compositions such as "Footstompin 'Music", "People, Let's Stop The War" and "Loneliness", what were your inspirations for them?
Mark Farner: The winding down of the Vietnam War in America.

Rock On Stage: If on this commemorative tour of 50 years it was possible to invite any name of Rock to share the stage with you in a special show, which bands would be chosen and why?
Mark Farner: Alice Cooper because i’m currently working with Alice Cooper along with Wayne Kramer ( from MC5 ) and Johnny Bee ( from the Detroit Wheels ) on a current project honoring Detroit music on a current project.

Rock On Stage: What are the best shows ever made in your career?
Mark Farner: 1969 - First Atlanta Georgia Pop Festival and the 1971 Phoenix house shows in Madison Square Garden where the funds were used to build 7 Phoenix Drug Rehilbation Centers.

Rock On Stage: Tell us some curiosity about one of them.
Mark Farner: The lighting director put dance wax on the stage fro the first Madison Square Garden show and didn’t tell me. I found out by taking the stage and it was like getting on a ice skating rink.

Rock On Stage: If there is much talk that Rock is going to die, and although I believe that the renovation is a bit difficult, sometimes there is a name like Greta Van Fleet, which makes us happy and proves that while you can plug a guitar, a drummer allied to a good vocalist, the flame will continue to burn, for you, will we have future names that will be able to have a long successful career as the Grand Funk Railroad?
Mark Farner: Only if the hearts are giving to the craft and the dignitity of Rock and Roll is preserved.

Rock On Stage: And is there any band that has come to you that you felt could walk the path?
Mark Farner: That hasn’t happen in the world i live in.

Rock On Stage: What memories do you keep of your other passages in Brazil?
Mark Farner: Some great people, great food, and the feeling of love that was left in my soul.

Rock On Stage: Did you ever get to know a place or try some typical food?
Mark Farner: I didn't venture out to far in Brazil because of time restraints but i did pick upsome good charcole cooked chicken in a gathering of venders under an overpass in Sao Paulo.

Rock On Stage: Thank you for the interview, to close I ask you to leave your final considerations and also an invitation for Brazilian fans who will be in the shows.
Mark Farner: I thank god for the abundance of love that has flowed in the music to my brazilain fans as the fans have reinforced that love in me when i have played my Rock and Roll in Brazile.
